EQUINE CLONING
Every project begins by understanding the horse, the value of its genetics, and the owner’s vision. From there, we guide the entire cloning journey, from obtaining the tissue sample to the birth and delivery of the clone.
WHY CLONE A HORSE?
A horse may be invaluable due to its athletic performance, pedigree, offspring, reproductive potential, bloodline rarity, or the unique bond built with its owner or rider.
Cloning makes it possible to preserve that genetic foundation and carry it forward into new sport or breeding programs. Before proceeding, we evaluate the horse, the reproductive goal, and the ideal timing.
«La clonación permite preservar esa base genética y darle continuidad en nuevos proyectos deportivos o de cría.»
SUCCESS CASES
An extraordinary mare and an exceptional mother…
Mother of the legendary Dolfina Cuarterera…
A USPA Polo Hall of Fame inductee…
A show jumping mare that exceeded all expectations. Vicky chose to clone her genetics to preserve her qualities and project them into the future.
HOW DOES THE EQUINE CLONING PROCESS WORK?
Equine cloning combines laboratory science, advanced reproduction, and veterinary care. At Synergy, we support the entire process and keep the client informed at every stage.
We assess the horse, the project goals, and cell availability. If a cell line does not yet exist, a tissue biopsy is collected following Synergy’s veterinary protocol.
In the laboratory, we isolate and culture the cells, verify their viability, and store them in the genetic bank. This cell line is the starting point for cloning.
Through somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT), genetic material from the donor cell is transferred into an enucleated oocyte. Resulting embryos are cultured under controlled conditions.
Embryos meeting all quality criteria are transferred into carefully selected and synchronized recipient mares.
Our veterinary team performs close reproductive and ultrasound monitoring throughout pregnancy up until the moment of foaling.
Following birth, we provide specialized neonatal veterinary monitoring during the foal’s first days of life until final handover.
EQUINE CLONING FAQ
Learn answers to common questions about biopsies, the cloning timeline, gestation, and what a cloned horse inherits.
The sample is obtained through a simple biopsy performed by a veterinarian. We prepare a guide covering the full procedure and the requirements to take the sample correctly.
Once the laboratory process is complete and embryo production is achieved, gestation lasts the same as for any horse: approximately 11 months. Generally speaking, a successful project allows you to expect the clone's birth around a year after starting the process.
The clone shares the same genetic information as the source horse. Genetics set the starting point. Its development will depend, as with any other horse, on gestation, management, feeding, training, environment and the experiences that shape its life. That's why cloning preserves the genetics — the story gets written again.
